The process of humbling Israel began with making life harder (“letting you hunger” [Deut. 8:3]). This hardship was then resolved by the divine provision of manna, a solution that was unfamiliar and unprecedented. Although nothing further is said here about the manna, this emphasis on its unfamiliarity can reasonably be taken as a summary of the manna’s representing a new and distinctive rhythm and practice of life as spelled out more fully in Exodus 16.
